American election, God and other minor issues

I doubt anyone will read this entry so I feel safe to be entirely open.

First off, I'm not American, for which I am profoundly greatful. Sorry if that offends people, actually I don't give a toss if it does. People are far too scared of offending others and America has an appauling track record of being offensive and not appoligising.

I'm British, techincally England ans due to the Bush-Blair 'relationship' we've had the humilation of suffering, I've been paying attension to the presidental race more than I usually would, and now I'm damn scared that McCain and Palin will win, in fact I'm almost 99% sure they will.

Everyone keeps reminding us America is the most powerful country and as such the president affects everyone. This annoys me because America has got to be the most self-absorbed, self important nation on Earth. Other countries and continants exist too, but unless there's a conflict to get involved in, oil to be gained they generally don't want to know, because, y'know, God loves America, it's the only country he blesses. Apprantly. Yep that was a ref to Michael Moore there. He's one American I do like.

I have nothing against American people. One of my best and dearest friends is American, tons of actors, singers, scientists and thinkers I admire are American, there are a few past presidents I deeply admire too. What pisses me off it the whole attitude of America.

Take the whole Russell Brand 'scandel' for insulting Bush  and people's reactions, mostly along teh lines of 'Die Brand Die' Bush is offically the most unpopular president in modern history, even he knows he's a joke, so where do Americans get off being so bloody prissy, what's thee big deal. Comedians are supposed to deliver barbs, they make us think but then that's never gone down well in some parts of America *coughRedneckcough*

I don't liek Sarah Palin, she scared me most, more than McCain. I respect that she's 100% sincere in her beliefs and she has charm to spare but being that rigid in her views does a country no favours. America is as sprawling and diverse as you can get. Each state is almost a country unto itsself so how does tunnel vision work? Unfortuntely she is exactly what America loves, her flaws work like Homer Simpson, whether it's an unmarried pregnant teen, a down Syndrome child, a son at war - she represents a 'real American. How terryfying.

I disagree with her on just about everything: abortion, death penality, war, polar bears, guns, creationism, ...I could go on forever but you get the picture.

Abortion would never be an issue in England like it is in America. Sure we have religous people, but nothing like the Evangelists that have a stranglehold on America. Religon cannot rule a democracy, because religon isn't fair. It tells you some people are more equal than others (like we didn't already know that), that many of the ways we live are wrong - then ironically that same religon (I'm talking Christianity here) endorces love, anti-war and forgiveness, not Repulican strongsuits.

If Jesus was alive now, he would be horrified his 'followers' condone death, guns, war and hatred. Jesus went out of his way to befriend the sinners, fallen and the outcasts. In today's society, that would mean death row inmates, gays, transsexuals, prostitues, and women who've had abortions.

Sure we've always been guilty of them, the Old Testimates condones most of it, but Chrstians should follow the new testiment, clearly Evangelicals didn't get the memo.

I don't think anyone has the right to tell someone else how to live. You believe abortion is wrong. Fine, but don't you dare try to contorl other women's decisions. Every situation is difficult. There have been cases of 12 year olds raped and getting pregnant, how the hell do you tell a child they have to go through a pregnancy because it's God's will. I'd love for Palin and McCain to have to tell every rape victim who's pregnant they have to endure a constant reminder of their attack for the next 9 months, to a mother who leave her other children motherless because the baby will kill her, to a family who already have a large family and can't cope with the severely disabled child she's carrying, or the woman that simply isn't ready for a baby because just maybe she should control what happens to her body.

Also from a horrendously scientic point of view, the world is over populated, look at Africa or China. If every woman had every baby, then the world would be in even more of a mess. We don't have unlimitied resources. Oil will eventually be gone, and our climate is changing, and future leaders need to accept that, because it's their future generations who will have to deal with all of this crap, and if Palin is truly pro-life, she'll want to see humanity survive.

Of course abortion is one of the big Things about this election, but want to know where McCain, and especially Palin stand on other issues that haven't been mentioned: domestic violence springs to mind. Homeless shelters, protecting children from pornography - which starts with stopping sexualising little girls.

And why is America so hung up on sex and virginity? I'm curious. Sex is a biological function. It's messy and can be amazing, painful, humilating, create life and be a powerful tool to communicate love or power. Why does it matter if someone is a virgin or not, America prizes virginity amongst it's young, but won't teach proper sex education. Why? Why is it so sinful to protect children, to teach them about STDs, rape (including date-rape), abortion, sexual abuse, porn etc. I'm not saying show them porn, for example, I don't agree with it, but it still exists and can do damage. Teens are confronted by sexually explicit or at least sexually suggestive images every day. Just telling them to abstain, wait till marriage or telling them to tell an adult if someone touches them in a 'naughty place' is not sufficant. A protected child is a knowledable child.  All these things They happen so don't ignore them - everything they need to know to survive in the real world. If Americans value children, they'll stop they're own children getting an STD that renders them infertile. And stop putting all the pressure on women to be solely responsible for sex. Getting married after finding yourself pregnant is not acting responsibilty, they'll most likely end up divorced because you rarely stay with the ssame person from age 17 to 70. Just a fact. I'm all for responsibility, just dish it out more envenly.

And don't get me started on the environment! What's she got against polar bears, it's like saying 'never mind, I'm sure they'll be fine in the sundan dessert' such an ignorant and dismissive response is worthy of Bush, and what about God - this is his world, how would he feel about seeing such casual disreguard for the world he took the time to create?

Why is the largest and richest nation so blinded in it's own opinions? I don't get it.

I agree with you.
I´m from Spain, and what more bothers me is that they are scandalized for seeing a teat but then it is normal that the whole world could have a weapon, tiny madness...
Ah! It´s a very interesting entry! Kisses!

Hey! I swinged by tempted by supernatural and then just had to jump into this post to say Amen. Nice to meet you and hope you don´t mind.

Also, that would be north america. As any latino will point out, America is a continent, and we are part of it too. Most of us think it´s vaguely offensive the way that gringos (which is not a derogatory term, it just slides easier off the tongue than US citizen or some other such) have gone and claimed the american title all for themselves.

On abortion: Women have rights that include them having the right to decide whether or not they want to have children at a certain/any given point in their lives. It´s really not fair to stick them with a kid because they though that it was Tuesday when it was actually Wednesday, so they skipped a pill, or because they are just that fertile. I really don´t think that allowing abortion inside a reasonable window of time is too much to ask, especially if in that window of time the fetus is no more aware than a carrot would be.

On sex: What is with that? It seems like it´s this huge, life changing event. Seriously, it seems like I missed the memo on this, because I´m pretty certain that my life before was not all that different from my life after. It´s fun, it´s nice, but it´s not life altering or rocket-science-sy. You should teach kids the basics and tell them to put it off until they are emotionally mature enough that it won´t be a big deal.

On environmental policy: No, the greenhouse effect is not something made up by the evil democrats to try and take off votes from the republicans. (Sometimes I don´t know whether to bursts out crying or laughing. God, some people are just... *gestures*)

Also, not very related and just to get it off my chest, most latinos don´t build boats in their backyards in hopes of sailing into north american shores and becoming gringos. I´m chilean, I could actually buy a plane ticket to go there if I wanted to and I don´t want to be american. I am not oppressed, I don´t wear charro hats, my diet isn´t based in corn or beans and we happen to be very civilized, in that there are roads and cars and running water. Amazing, I know.
See, in most Hollywood movies I´ve seen, Latin america is made out of dirty little towns, that are either in the desert, in the beach or surrounded by jungle, where everyone spends their days sleeping siesta, dancing salsa and praying hysterically in the local catholic church. What actually happens is that people go to school and collegue and work (in cars and all), and occasionally run away to their preferred happy-hour spot.

first off i'd like to say that i was brought to your journal from the supernatural fandom and i do love your work .. second of all i am american .. that would be north america.. in general i agree with most of what you have said .. with some added comments.. first off .. the slightly offended part just has to say that .. what is shown on tv media etc is a very pretty version of one part of the US .. the whole McCain's going to win what is wrong with us for our policies and all that can be summed up by saying that the 'one person, one vote' is a misnomer .. the real actual working people do not get a say in who gets the job i think that was proved back 2000 when we had such a cluster fuck of an election.. the only real time we get 'One Person, One Vote' is at the small local elections and as you can imagine and i have to believe that this is true for everyone everywhere no matter what country the higher you go in politics the more you are concerned with media money power and privilege.. i myself have voted in every election since i turned 18 i am 35 now i am raising two children on 400$ a month with no credit cards or government help.. everyone i know is like this.. the shows on television are such an out-there dream and lovely to look at but they in no way show the real people that make up the country.. .. i don't know if any of this makes since but i just hope that we aren't all judged by the upper very rich and lets not forget minority of the US people.. yes we are a spoiled nation.. but with the trickle down economy that we have up until recently we were skating by on the work that Pres. Reagan did.. Clinton (whom i did Not vote for) started our downward spiral and everyone else is a product of that life.. lets be honest here the people of my generation did not put the majority of the policies into place nor did we ruin the worlds eco system.. we aren't the who made the abortion laws or religious policies .. if anything the generation that is just now coming into it's own politically is responsible for the majority of the changes .. for too long has the old upper class white man (i am white/native american by the way) had the run of the country and hopefully that will change.. i firmly believe that McCain will not win and that things will get harder and darker for us as a nation before it gets any better.. now with that being said .. .. Why is the largest and richest nation so blinded in it's own opinions? We aren't the largest nation and we are only the richest on paper .. if we were blind Obama would never have gotten as far as he has because we would have stagnated in the sixties civil riots..
sigh i'm shutting up now i am not normally so outspoken on my politics but this election is going to see some major changes and i really hope the rest of the world does not suffer from the changes that will happen in the next ten years the last sixteen/twenty years has been terrible in US politics and it seems like that is all we are being judged on.. most of my friends can't even see how bad it is likely to get.. they keep doing crazy things like max-ing out their credit cards for stupid crap and sigh.. never mind really shutting up this time.. (also i do want to note that i am not touching on religion)

America - not so much arrogant, just unlucky

I know that alot of Americans feel that our country is incredibly arrogant, opinionated and for a lack of better word stuck-up. But I do not believe that this is true. I was born in a different country, but I have settled and lived in America for quite some time. When I hear about the negative sentiments that so many Americans have about their OWN country; I believe that this is why alot of foreigners dislike Americans. They have no respect for their own country, no pride in their homeland.

What I have discovered since coming to America is simply this: America is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Our country is considered to be one of the most financially secure and politically liberated countries in the world. Our country is considered a paradigm, a model example. And it is because of this, that our country is slowly being pulled apart. America is expected to provide hundreds of millions of dollars worth of medical supplies, food, education, and other forms of relief for the rest of the world. If an ally country starts a feud with another country (and violence escalates) we are expected to step in and support said country. Georgia is a prime example. And if said country is innumerably damaged and is in need of financial support - we are expected to step in and pick up the tab.

And yet, if America says no. If our country says that it needs to take a step back; that we don't want to be involved, or that we (our country) ourselves have troubles that need to mitigated then we are painted as deserters. We are blamed for failing to take part in whatever world turmoil is currently taking place and are then expected to shoulder whatever burden is thrown at us.

I come from Korea. Even though Korea is an ally of the United States, the fact remains that Korea takes care of Korea. We are not responsible for the welfare of foreign nations, nor are we expected to shell out financial aid for any country that is in political or financial turmoil. We are considered a peaceful and pacifist country simply due to the fact that we are never burdened with the responsibility of providing military support for another country. If Korea does provide military support, then it is on the country's terms (not the rest of the world's). America, is not so fortunate.

You're completly right in everything you say.

I was particularly annoyed when I wrote that entry and it came out as a very one-sided rant.

One of my best friends is American, and I adore her, adn I know the vast majority of Americans themselves are not arrogant, swimming in money or Bible bashing, it's just those are the ones you hear from.

People *do* expect a lot from (North) America, because it is so large and wealthy. It's very much a double edged sword, because only a small amount hold that wealth and they don't seem willing to share, but that is the story of every country. With offering aid, I do understand. Everyone always condemns America for interveening and/or invading - Iraq obviously, Veitnam etc, but at the same time people do look to America first to provide aid, so it's one of those thankless roles. I do think things like oil do provide a huge insentive but also I think that the American people - the ordinary citizens who stood nothign to gain, do want to help, they want to liberate other countries, give them a taste of demoncracy.

Pride in your country is very rare now. I only ever see it in America. I certainly don't feel proud to be British. I'm not ashamed but it's just not an issue for me, I don't feel any alligence to a country, I would certainly not go to war or lay down my life for one. I'm sure that makes me selfish but it's simply who I am - I'm loyal to people not land.

THanks for your opinions - and sorry if any of my offended you! :)

Don't worry. I wasn't offended or angry. Besides, everyone is allowed an opinion. I was happy to read yours.

While I do not agree with some of the things said, I am not offended in any way shape or form. I am American and I myself am appalled by many thing we are represented by and known for. I love my country, but we do have our faults... It's unfortunate and sometimes downright aggravating.

Hello! I'm an American and with the election of Mr Obama, I am very happy that our country believes that it needs positive change, too! There was a time when America (the country/government) was respected all around the world and I am optimistic for the first time that that reputation can be revisited. I don't know what will happen in the next 4-8 years, but I do know that it will be better than what the last 8 years brought us. I love elections because it really does give us a chance to be hopeful for our futures. Thanks!

Regards,

HoL
